The number of social interactions that a patient with heart disease has may significantly affect the likelihood of his or her survival, researchers report. In fact, whether or not that support comes from friends, family or other confidants is less important than the total number of people a patient has in his or her social circle, according to a report in the April issue of Psychosomatic Medicine. Dr. Beverly Brummett and her colleagues at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, evaluated 430 patients with severe heart disease for both the quality and quantity of their social interactions over a five-year period.
